Bethany Goldblum

Faculty Scientist

Biography

Dr. Bethany Goldblum is a Faculty Scientist in the Nuclear Data Group at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory and an Associate Professor in the Department of Nuclear Engineering at the University of California, Berkeley. She serves as Executive Director of the Nuclear Science and Security Consortium (NSSC), a multi-institution initiative established by the National Nuclear Security Administration to train the next generation of nuclear security experts. In this role, she coordinates research and builds relationships between the NSSC’s eleven academic institutions and five US DOE National Laboratory partners. Goldblum also leads the Bay Area Neutron Group, a research team focused on applied nuclear physics and neutron detection for nuclear security applications. Her broader research interests include nuclear data, low energy nuclear physics measurements, scintillator characterization, machine learning applications, experimental wargaming, and multi-source analytics for proliferation detection.

She compliments her passion for nuclear security science with her interests in education and nuclear weapons policy through her leadership of the Public Policy and Nuclear Threats Boot Camp. She also founded and directs the Nuclear Policy Working Group, an interdisciplinary team of scholars developing policy solutions to strengthen global nuclear security. Her policy-relevant research has been published in Science, Arms Control Today, and the Nonproliferation Review, among other venues.

Goldblum maintains active collaborations with the US DOE National Laboratories, and is an affiliate at Lawrence Berkeley, Lawrence Livermore, and Sandia National Laboratories. She is the author of more than 80 publications on nuclear science and policy issues and recipient of the Krell Institute’s 2020 James Corones Award in Leadership, Community Building and Communication. Goldblum received a Ph.D. in Nuclear Engineering from the University of California, Berkeley.
